Today's discussion focuses on the impact of divorce or separation on loneliness, along with practical tips to help overcome it.

Person looking out into the distance
Loneliness can affect anyone. We all have various reasons for feeling lonely, whether alone or in company. If chronic loneliness is not addressed, it can start to impact our mental well-being.
Divorce or separation involves letting go of aspects of your life that no longer fit, leading to inevitable changes and a mix of emotions, including loneliness.

What causes loneliness after divorce?

Separation from children:
Divorce often means being apart not only from your ex-partner but also from your children during their time with the other parent.

Strained relationships:
Breakups can strain friendships and family relationships, especially those connected to your ex-partner.

New living arrangements:
Moving to a new place, living alone for the first time, and potentially working from home can intensify feelings of isolation.

Occasional loneliness:
Missing out on events and holidays once shared with your ex-partner or family can result in feelings of solitude.

Strategies to overcome loneliness after a divorce or breakup:

Reviving hobbies and rediscover activities you love or have always wanted to try.

Investing in yourself and prioritise self-care, from relaxing habits to essential tasks like dental appointments and financial check-ins.

Establishing a new routine and create a fresh daily schedule that incorporates necessary tasks and activities you enjoy.

Reconnecting with friends, strengthen your support system by spending time with friends who uplift you and distancing yourself from toxic relationships.

Avoiding comparisons. Focus on your own happiness and avoid comparing yourself to others.

Identifying triggers, recognise what triggers feelings of loneliness and take steps to address them gradually.

Maintaining communication and establish communication plans with your children to stay connected and alleviate any concerns they may have.

Making future plans. Plan enjoyable activities to look forward to, either alone or with others, to boost your mood and confidence.

Seeking support. Don't hesitate to seek help if feelings of loneliness persist, as long-term loneliness can impact mental health.
